Malaysia

South East Asia is a perennial favourite for UK holidaymakers and in 2014 ABTA is tipping Malaysia to take its place in the sun following the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2013. Visitors’ first sight will be the capital Kuala Lumpur, an intriguing mix of Moorish and colonial architecture, 21st century skyscrapers, shopping malls and restaurants featuring Malaysia’s spicy and delicious cuisine. The archipelago of Langawi off the west coast is the ideal place to relax with its 99 islands featuring authentic, working fishing villages as well as luxurious, good value hotels. Its white sandy beaches and clear waters are amongst the best in South East Asia. Once you’ve recharged your batteries head to Sarawak and Sabah in Malaysian Borneo to see orang-utans in their natural rain forest habitat before climbing to the summit of majestic Mount Kinabalu. The surrounding seas are also perfect for snorkelling.

Best time to visit:

Year round. Malaysia basks in year round sunshine; the heaviest rainfall occurs between November to February in Borneo and the East Coast.

Kuala Lumpur

Although still a relatively young city, Kuala Lumpur offers a multicultural heritage which is reflected in its architecture - mosques and temples stand beside colonial buildings and modern tower blocks. Visit historical landmarks including the Royal Palace, National Museum and Petronas Twin Towers. Kuala Lumpur is a shoppers paradise, offering modern shopping malls and traditional markets.

Penang

Penang offers miles of golden sandy beaches, the most famous being Batu Ferringhi on the northern coastline. Away from the beaches there is a wealth of multi-cultural heritage to be explored. Georgetown is the capital city and is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Langkawi

Langkawi is the main island in a cluster of 104 islands scattered throughout the Andaman Sea. Little development has ensured that it has retained its rural and laid-back charm, with friendly locals, traditional culture and miles of deserted sandy beaches. Explore Pulau Payar National Marine Prak, a collection of 4 islands. These islands are a haven for diving and snorkelling.

Borneo

No visit to Malaysia is complete until you have been to Borneo, famed for its lush tropical jungles filled with diverse wildlife, wide sandy beaches and oceans abound with rich marine life. Discover jungle trails and observe wildlife from the 100ft tall canopy walkway amongst the rainforest branches. View Orang-Utans on a free roaming feeding platform, where they are being slowly reintrodusced into the wild. Short tours will ensure that you dont miss a thing and these can be combined with Malaysia multi centre holidays.
